I've actually come to like The Magicians quite a lot. Took a while tbh, but I now look forward to weekly episodes. Season 2 has now finished - but a Season 3 has already been confirmed for another 13 episode season just like S2. Renewed for a S3 on the same week as S2 ended - the series must be doing something right. I recommend The Magicians - it may take you a while to get fully into it, but if you persevere then I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Well I don't want to spoil anything and the show is quite different sometimes from the books but Amber and Umber appear in the end and Renard doesn't appear as much as in the tv show. In fact, he doesn't end up like in the show. You should definitely read the books, they are good !

Sooo to recognize outlandish commentary I shall state a few things. For firsts this is much different modern and real than harry potter. Though some is a bit fantasy as well the fact remains this show is a masters work. Sexuality action drama horror etc. They even travel often to real locations and the actors and actresses do very clean work. To speak negatively of this series boggles my mind yet to each thier own as wise ones have said in the past. I give the magicians a deserved 10/10

I was expecting something fun and entertaining. This has a very dark and unpleasant side to it. I'm not sure I'll stick around for a season 2. Not sure I'll stick around for the end of season 1 the way it's going. It's well acted and has high production value. The story could be written without making the viewer uncomfortable, but maybe that's done on purpose.

*I haven't read any of the books, this review is based solely on the presentation of the TV series*Let me paint a picture for you: a young man leaves the comforts of his dorm rooms, wallowing in self pity. He's attractive, intelligent, has had the difficulties of college education cushioned by having his student finances and tuition taken care of for him, is graduating very soon with endless possibilities at his fingertips... Knowing all of this, it's quite understandable that he's unhappy and crippled by depression. I mean, life is so hard when you have opportunities banging down your door in this economy. No one understands his burden - well, no one but Ethan Couch. Sound familiar? Well, this is Quentin Coldwater, and he's basically every unrelatable hero you've ever seen on every bad television show in history. He may also be the worst friend in television history as well, but we'll get to that later.Quentin is totally bummed out because his childhood friend Julia is no longer as into (read 'obsessed with') The Chronicles of Narnia as he is. She's too busy enjoying the company of her friends, her boyfriend, and getting excited over her and Quentin's future to bother with those childish books anymore. What a selfish $&#@%, right? Well, it turns out that this school of Witchcraft and Wizardry really exists, and she and Quentin are to be tested on their abilities. Well, after a written exam, they ask Quentin to demonstrate magic, and after some questionably escalated pushing he makes a deck of cards float about the room and flutter into a perfect scale model of the X-Men mansion. They ask Julia to, well, gtfo. Why? Because reasons. They can determine just by the written exam (and not particularly well as we'll find out later) that she's not particularly special, and have no interest in giving her the same opportunity they gave Quentin. So, they're going to wipe her memory so that she can go back to believing she's a muggle. Ah, but there's much more to Julia than meets the eye; while the instructor's back is turned to her, she does something very clever: she gives herself a shallow cut to the arm, superficial but deep enough to serve its purpose. The cut is a bit of an anchor, an associative memory; when she sees the cut, she can place herself into the moment she inflicted it, this slowly fighting back whatever method they used to make her forget.Meanwhile, Quentin is fitting right into the crowd at Hogwarts. He's growing snarky, self- absorbed, and slipping right into his 'Chosen One' role quite nicely. And when his old friend calls him to ask for his help regarding his childhood friend Julia, he is completely overtaken with crippling concern and... Ah, who are we kidding? He really didn't care at first. Julia's boyfriend tells Quentin that she's not eating, not sleeping, is in a very bad place, and he's well... He's laughing with his new friends on the other end, distracted, nodding, hoping this conversation ends soon so that he can go back to being important. But he agrees to come mingle with ye olde peasants of his past and speak with her. And here is where Quentin is revealed to be a disgusting scum-#%$& - er, I meant to say a sympathetic hero deserving of our interest and respect. Julia tells him of the cut, and how she's been able to work around their deceit. She's even started teaching herself magic - and is coming along quite nicely for not having all of the advantages available to the students who were accepted. And Quentin is completely understanding like any true friend would be. Oh, right, what he actually does is tear her down quite viciously by reminding her that the instructors informed her that she wasn't unique or special and that she needs to just accept her mediocrity and move on with her pathetic life.Quite frankly this is when I realized that what I was watching was the wrong side of what would have probably been a fantastic TV show - if Julia was the real heroine. Think about this; Julia is the relatable lead here. She stopped believing in the magic and left it behind only to learn that it was real all along and she was wrong. You think she's going to pull through the exams, rooting on her side, only to find out that she was rejected. But being the clever girl she is, she beats their mind tricks, accepts that she was wrong, and grows a little by understanding all of the time she's wasted over the years by not believing and teaches herself these magic spells. What should have happened is that the villain (or an agent on their behalf) comes for her and the dean has no choice but to let her stay in the academy to protect her from this threat and use her to solve the mystery behind their return, thus allowing her to prove her worth and earn her place among them. Instead, it seems what we have is the foundation of Julia becoming a villain and Quentin keeping his place among the bratty adult-children because he's the Chosen One. He himself hasn't really shown us why he's special or deserving of anything, really. Interesting/Plot-Centric ghosts and individual characters appear before him and speak to him of doom and how he needs to stop the coming threat, but aside from being told he's the hero we never really see him do anything to show us why he is.Some positive aspects: the effects at least look well done. The direction is pretty damn good for a TV pilot. The score was great. It's very polished, so at least even if it turns out to be a cancellation in the making, it'll be a visually pleasing train-wreck.

The narrative is well set, placed in the modern world with (young) adult protagonists; which immediately makes it more real, relatable and interesting. And the idea it proposes - that the cause behind being awkward teenager with identity crisis is actually sensitivity to magic - is a brilliant touch, with timeless quality and something that should resonate well with the audience.It's based on a book I haven't read - so I can't really tell you how much it's faithful to the original or not. However, the storytelling in this TV adaptation so far has no flaws, it's just perfect.It's contemporary, it's realistic, it creates credible logic in its own universe, it's presented by quality actors and it builds gradually into what I would expect to become a much more interesting and powerful version of the "Harry Potter" fantasy. And if you might think we don't need a modernized, "American" version of Potter-world - well, I believe you're wrong. J.K. Rowling may have started it all, but now we want somebody to try and make it into something more. For me Harry Potter was never anything more then a cute story of an slightly-upgraded-but-still-out-of-date world of magic for children aged 4- 14. And because I will at this point most likely have antagonized all hard core HP fans - I want you to know I have nothing against Harry Potter. I think it's crafted skilfully, it's cute and I like it quite a bit, but at the time it was made I've simply felt I was too old (24) to get fully immersed into that world. Well, THIS story makes me feel quite differently about it from the start. It sits quite well with my expectations and requirements.I'll say this adventure has started down the right path. We can only hope it stays or better yet, evolves that way. Judging by what I've seen in the manner of directing it so far, my hopes are high. And I don't really care if it doesn't follow the original, I've given up on that a while ago, while following the series such as The Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead. All I care about now is quality storytelling and and quality delivery.Whoever claims it's boring - either is not really a fantasy fan, or doesn't really understand how quality and convincing dramatic build- up works: you really DO need a proper character-build in order to achieve it. And if the pilot is not to do that, what is? This has all been confirmed times and again, and just recently strong case has been made by the success and critical acclaim of series such as Breaking Bad and its spin-off, Better Call Saul. We all know Breaking Bad has reached its peak interest, wide critical acclaim and cult status with its audience - only in its last, 5th season. Talking about build- up...And BB was never really about thrilling action - the external development of narrative only served the purpose of creating dramatic tension that led to the inner change and (morally downward) development of the character (ergo, breaking bad)... But that hasn't stopped it from being greatest show ever, just the opposite. That being said, I found the first episode of Breaking Bad quite slow and boring - but by the end of it I was curious. After 2 or 3 episodes - I couldn't stop. I felt a similar pull while watching the pilot of this show, and since I wasn't totally happy with the only review at the time and also believed it deserves better rating - I wanted to contribute a bit if I can. Am I saying this can be AS great? Well, no. Firstly, it's just too far away from day-to-day reality general public is experiencing, to be AS relatable. You're immersed into a surreal world where rules and contents are made-up and you have no any saying over that: you are merely an observer, who can only accept what happens and track how much it makes sense. That makes you and your life experience - for the most part - excluded. And more importantly, you can't really expect such ingenious character development when issues and inner conflicts of the main character are nowhere near as deep and socially and existentially relevant to be able to engage you on such a fundamentally deep level.However, as we are all nowadays more and more exploring the true potential of life - the topic of magic is indeed asking for far more (quality) exploration of it in the modern TV and film medium then it's being done at the moment. So, this show is doing it justice, at the least. And when I look at it again, after everything I wrote here - the pace of this show is actually amazing. There are sudden twists in the plot that make it quite unpredictable, there's been already a powerful appearance of a villain which promises to be a real, imminent and overpowering threat to our unlikely hero - while interesting inversions of the common motives and good-vs-bad principles of fantasy worlds (such as walking/not walking the "garden path") and introduction of spiritual cross-overs (such as "not having any molecule of control over what happens") make it undoubtedly cast a new, fresh and exciting light to the genre... I've had a lot of fun watching it and can't wait to see more! 25th of January just seems so far, far away...And if you still don't like it, I can conclude only one thing - you probably have no "magical aptitude" AT ALL :-))

Harry Potter was never anything more then a cute story of an slightly upgraded but still out-of-date world of magic for children aged 4- 12. THIS adventure has started down the right path. We can only hope it stays - or even better - evolves that way. Judging by what I've seen in the manner of directing it, my hopes are high.Whoever claims it's boring - either is not really a fantasy fan, or doesn't really understand how quality, entertaining and convincing dramatic build-up works: you really DO need a proper character-build to achieve it. And if the pilot is not to do that, what is? This has all been confirmed times and again, and just recently strong case has been made by the success and critical acclaim of series such as Braking Bad and its spin-off, Better Call Saul. Braking Bad has reached its peak interest, wide critical acclaim and cult status with its audience - only in its last, 5th season. Talking about build- up...Having said that, I found the first episode of Braking Bad quite boring to start with, but then towards the end of the episode - a hint or a suggestion of an idea in which way the character and the story of an - under-appreciated, out of luck, out of health, out of money and finally, totally humiliated - high school chemistry professor might be developing when he's unintentionally discovered possibility of entering lucrative crystal- meth "business" - well, I was curious. After 2 or 3 episodes, I couldn't stop. (And that's how binge-watching started for me :-)). Truly, Braking Bad was never really about thrilling action, rather the external action served the purpose of portraying the inner change and (morally downward) development of the character - ergo, braking bad... Moreover, first (and possibly other episodes, too, I can't remember) were all about setting up everything in his environment to make sure he's got no other choice but to go that way, plus - making sure you've got nothing but sympathy for him and you fully support him go that way - no matter how totally immoral and illegal it was. Any action that followed, followed slowly. But that hasn't stopped it from being greatest show ever - au contraire.I felt a similar pull during, and ESPECIALLY at the end of the pilot of this show. Can this be AS great? Probably not, for this is just too much out of reality general public is experiencing on the daily basis - to be AS relatable, but the topic of magic nowadays is indeed asking for far more (quality) exploration of it in the modern TV and film medium, then it's offered at the moment. This show is doing it its rightful justice. And, now when I look at it again, after everything I wrote here - the pace of this show is amazing, actually. Crazy even :-) There are twists in the plot that make it quite unpredictable, and interesting inversions of the common motives and principles of fantasy worlds - probably only especially keen eyes and genre fans will have fully recognized - make it cast a new, fresh and exciting light to the fantasy genre... I've had a lot of fun watching it and can't wait to see more! 25th of January just seems so far, far away... If you don't like it, I can conclude only one thing - you probably have no "magical aptitude". AT ALL :-))

This is an EXCELLENT adaptation of a story from a book I have never read - so I, too, can't tell you how much it's faithful to the original.However, the storytelling in this TV adaptation (thankfully to the book or not) has no flaws - it's perfect!It's contemporary, it's realistic, it creates credible logic in its universe, it's presented by quality actors and it builds gradually into what I would expect to be a much more interesting and powerful version of Harry Potter experience. And if you might think we have no need for an American variant of "Potter" world - you're wrong, WE do. J.K. Rowling may have started it all in present times, but now we need somebody to make it BETTER. After 2 or 3 episodes, I couldn't stop. (And that's how binge-watching started for me, as well.) I felt similar pull at the end of the pilot of this show. Can this be AS great? Probably not, but - the topic of magic today indeed asks for more exploration in modern TV and film art-form and, now that I think about it - the pace of this show is actually amazing. Crazy, really.
